Distance Education

We are committed to providing accessible and flexible learning opportunities for students within Gila County and throughout Arizona. Recognizing the diverse needs of our student population and in full support of the College’s mission, GCC offers a comprehensive distance education program that includes both fully online and hybrid course formats to support students in the completion of their academic goals.

Core Principles:

  • Accessibility: We strive to make educational opportunities available to students who may not be able to attend traditional on-campus courses due to geographical limitations, work schedules, family responsibilities, or other personal circumstances. Distance education provides an alternative pathway to achieve their academic and career goals.
  • Quality: We are committed to maintaining the same high standards of academic rigor and instructional quality in its distance education courses as in its face-to-face offerings. This includes qualified instructors, well-designed courses, and appropriate learning resources.
  • Student Support: We recognize that distance learners may have unique support needs. The College is dedicated to providing comprehensive resources and services to online and hybrid students, including academic advising, technical support, library services, online tutoring, and accessibility services.
  • Engagement: Distance education courses are designed to foster active student engagement through various interactive methods, such as discussion forums, collaborative projects, multimedia resources, and regular communication with instructors.
  • Flexibility: We aim to provide flexible learning options that accommodate the diverse schedules and learning styles of its students. Many online courses offer asynchronous learning opportunities, allowing students to access materials and complete assignments at their own pace within defined timelines.

Online Course Offerings

Gila Community College offers a variety of courses and programs that are delivered fully online. These courses are conducted primarily through the College’s learning management system (LMS), which provides a platform for accessing course materials, submitting assignments, participating in discussions, and interacting with instructors and peers. Online courses may utilize a range of technologies, including:

  • Asynchronous Learning: Students can access lectures, readings, and other materials at any time and complete assignments according to a flexible schedule within the course’s deadlines.
  • Discussion Forums: Online forums provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful discussions about course content, share ideas, and learn from one another.
  • Multimedia Resources: Instructors may incorporate videos, audio recordings, interactive simulations, and other multimedia elements to enhance the learning experience.
  • Online Assessments: Exams, quizzes, and other assessments may be administered online, potentially utilizing proctoring services to ensure academic integrity.
  • Communication Tools: Instructors communicate with students through email, announcements, and virtual office hours. Students may also have opportunities for synchronous interaction through web conferencing tools.

Hybrid Course Offerings

In addition to fully online courses, Gila Community College recognizes the value of blended learning experiences and offers hybrid courses. Hybrid courses combine online learning with required on-campus or live online meetings. This format aims to provide the flexibility of online learning while retaining the benefits of face-to-face interaction with instructors and classmates. The on-campus or live online components may include:

  • Lectures and Presentations: Instructors may deliver key concepts and facilitate discussions during scheduled in-person or live online sessions.
  • Group Activities and Projects: Hybrid courses may incorporate collaborative activities that require students to work together in person or virtually.
  • Labs and Experiential Learning: Some hybrid courses, particularly in science and technical fields, may include hands-on laboratory sessions or other experiential learning activities on campus.
  • Assessments: In-person exams or presentations may be required components of hybrid courses.

The specific format and schedule of on-campus or live online meetings in a hybrid course will be clearly outlined in the course syllabus. Hybrid courses are designed to offer a balance between the convenience of online learning and the direct engagement of traditional instruction.
